There is always debate around the safety of choosing out of hospital birth. Despite the fact that most of our grandparents were born at home, these days choosing not to birth in the hospital is an unusual decision for an American family. When discussing safety, it is important to remember that none of our choices --including birthing IN the hospital-- are without risk, and birthing outside the hospital isn't the right choice for all families. However, many studies have proven that birthing at home or in a birth center is as safe, or safer, than birthing in the hospital for low-risk mothers. As midwives, our goal is not home birth at any cost and your health and that of your baby is our first priority. Always discuss your options and your concerns with your caregivers. You are the only person who should decide where and how you birth.
